Sometimes, when two people have lived together for so long, they start being so comfortable about the situation that they forget they are in a relationship with the person they live with. Once they become too comfortable around each other, they forget that they need to continuously work on the relationship and not let the sparks die down.

This may be what is happening with you and your spouse. You have become too comfortable with each other that you forget how little things you used to do to each other can make such a huge difference in your relationship. It can be anything from a small kiss in the morning, random breakfasts in bed, quick messages or phone calls during the day, a nice chat over dinner, or a good night’s hug – little things that show affection and intimacy can go a long way.

Communication may also have a huge role to play in your situation. Even if you may have spent the entire day together or know how each other’s typical day goes, you always have to make it a point that you talk to your partner. Share stories about your day, no matter how trivial. Talk to each other about how certain issues and events going on around you make you feel. Even when you feel that you know your partner too well that you don’t need to ask him/her how he/she is doing, do it anyway. Otherwise, each of you will just continue to change (as most people do) and grow apart without you realizing what is happening before it is too late.

It is okay for each of you to change individually over time. But you have to keep certain aspects of what makes your relationship good intact, such as intimacy and communication. While it is good that each of you change for the better as individuals, know that you have become the better half of a team when you got married, and you need to keep working for that team every day for the rest of your life. If you love your partner, it should not be such a chore to have to do so.
